PERMANENTLY SHADOWED
Exhibition of nine paintings accompanying a harsh noise music event aboard the MS Stubnitz in Hamburg. Organized by Cooperfrau Melissengeist and Lodge, on January 15-2026. Funded by Verband für aktuelle Musik.
The sneak peek pictures from the setup day were taken by Niels Beyer (Lodge, Tremor Hex). Special thanks to Falk from the Stubnitz team for the fantastic lightning.
I learned that the title is a reference to “permanently shadowed craters” (Krater der ewigen Dunkelheit), which are regions on the Moon that remain in darkness at all times. So it felt almost magical to reflect that, on the MS Stubnitz, we were surrounded by the Elbe’s tidal waters, where the Moon’s influence becomes directly perceptible: On January 15, the Moon was in a waning crescent phase (the full Moon had been on January 3, with the new Moon only four days ahead), meaning the Sun and Moon were not fully aligned and the tidal forces were forecast to be moderate to weak. The tide shifts approximately every six hours from low to high, and at 7:30 pm (the event’s entry time), the tide was falling towars low. Low tide was at around 9 pm, and this was when I experienced an almost eerie stillness, when suddenly the water and ice no longer moved at all. A boat passed by in silence (movie below).
